Simple and chewy, these caramel apples are made from individually wrapped caramel squares melted with a bit of milk. After than the coating gets gummy and starts to slide off. The hard-candy shells are best consumed within three to four hours of making them. ![]() Wooden chopsticks also work.Ĭhocolate and caramel candy apples will last up to a week in the fridge if the pierced stem-end of the apple is coated (as in, not exposed to air). Remember to twist off the apples’ stems to make room for the wooden dowels, which can be found at craft and baking supply stores. Then rub the wax off with a paper towel and submerge it in cold water until ready to use. Melt off the wax by dipping the apple in boiling water for three seconds (any longer and the skin will break). It’s there to prolong the apple’s shelf life, but it also makes it hard for the caramel or syrup to stick. Unless you’re getting your apples straight from the orchard, odds are there’s a layer of wax on them. Granny Smith is my go-to, but Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp and Fuji work well. And look for a firm texture that will withstand hot temperatures when dipping. Opt for apples on the tart side to balance the sugary coating. I use smaller apples that can be eaten on the stick and aren’t so big they have to be sliced up. But not everyone goes door knocking and one treat that’s better homemade than store bought is the candy apple. That’s generally because no parent will let their trick-or-treater eat homemade candy these days. Halloween is the time of the year when we happily gorge on all sorts of supermarket candies and chocolates crammed with sugar, syrup and artificial colours and flavours. ![]()
